The work presents a vision for the development of land use between Salmisaari and the Lapinlahti Hospital area. With the re-alignment of Länsiväylä and street-like traffic arrangements, areas currently used for traffic and power plant purposes will transform into a functionally diverse and, from an urban structure perspective, rich part of Helsinki's city center. The area under planning extends from the Länsiväylä bridge to Porkkalankatu, which opens to Seurasaarenselkä in the north and borders the park area of the Lapinlahti Hospital in the northeast. Through the new urban structure, nearby areas like Hietaniemi Cemetery and the Lapinlahti Hospital can be freed from traffic disturbances.
The landscape, nature, urban, and cultural environment of Salmisaari and Lapinlahti provide a solid foundation for planning an ecological urban structure. The area will develop into a visually varied, environmentally respectful, ecologically sustainable, enjoyable, and lively part of the city. Salmisaari forms an urban ensemble that complements the city center, framing the landscapes of Seurasaarenselkä and Lapinlahti. Diverse city blocks and varied urban space series will connect to the surrounding environment via waterfront parks and green spaces. A waterfront route and a new canal will create an identity for the area, which is further strengthened by new development.
